Homemade Laundry Soap

I have heard of other people making their own laundry soap but have never tried it! I'm really excited because I feel as though I really accomplished something! Here is the recipe:

1 bar Ivory Soap (or Fels Naptha)
1 cup Borax
1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda

Grate the soap with a cheese grater or with a food processor. Mix together with the powders - Done! 2 Tablespoons per load.

You now have enough soap for 20 loads! And it only cost me $1.48!!! That's 0.07 cents a load! I bought 4 bars of Ivory soap, one box of Borax and one box of Washing Soda and I made 4 batches of laundry soap.

In case you can't find the washing soda - I purchased it from Alice.com but I've also found it at SOME Walmart's.

Update: I love the laundry detergent and will never go back to using store bought. Another thing I learned is that you should make sure to put the detergent into the water BEFORE the clothes or the soap may not dissolve if it gets caught up in the clothing. Warm or hot water works best to dissolve it!

  1. For extra dirty or stinky clothes I use 2 HEAPING Tablespoons and that works great!

  3. I have been using homemade soap, and I am finding bleached out spots on my clothes and towel. :( Should I do something differently? Which product do you think is causing the spots?

  4. Beth - I'm sorry you're having trouble! I would recommend washing them again because I'll bet the soap just did not get dissolved completely before adding the clothes and they are just soap spots! I hope anyway! Try to make sure to add the soap to the water and see that it dissolves before adding the clothes and it'll prolly take care of the problem! I have had that with really large loads - I washed a sleeping bag that ended up with that problem and I had to wash it a couple of times to get the spots out but it's good now! Hope it helps! Thanks for sharing that with me tho!

  6. Ann, do you like this better then traditional laundry soap? What made you switch? {Just curious} ;0) I have another friend who makes her own laundry soap as well. Right now I use liquid Era from Sams Club. {I can get it for $9.50. And I get about 170 loads out of it. I was just wondering if you use this all the time, and if you prefer it over other soaps. {I wouldn't mind testing it out for myself sometime!} Thanks for sharing, and linking-up for "Simply Homemaking". :0)
